We Shall All Be Healed
Wednesday, August 31, 2005
A lot to talk about over the past week or so since I arrived back in Buffalo, but not enough energy to actually say it.

My flight was originally delayed along with the power being out at the Buffao Niagara Airport when I arrived -- not a good sign. My cross country enthusiast roommate Dave was there to pick me up in his new Ford Ranger, and I headed back to Tower 2 (my place of residence for the year) with just a couple bags, and the rest of my worldly possessions set to arrive on Saturday. Had a good first day (and night) back.

Had a great time Friday, saw James (and his new Cobalt) and Adam, with their new snazzy apartment. They let me stay the night, after we saw two movies (The Brothers Grimm --- not fantastic, but much much better than the Aliens rip off "The Cave" which was so dreadful that it left the possibility for a sequel open. Let's hope that doesn't happen.

Saw my parents Saturday, and after thanking them graciously, proceeded to set up my room for approximately 30 minutes before heading off to Fallsview Casino up in Canada, eh. James won about $250 via the blackjack and slot machines, while Adam took home around 200 through blackjack as well. I had a good night -- a few gin and tonics and a few Coronas, along with a net profit at the end of the night. One of the few times all of us will walk out of a casino in the green.

There's a chance I may head back this weekend to Casino Niagara, in hopes of accessing the poker room (Fallsview's minimum was 6/12 limit and 5/5 no limit. I almost played at the NL tables, but the blinds were too much for me at that point.

My classes are looking to be much more difficult than last semester's. My main Social Work class is going to run me up 40 hours of volunteer work needed to pass the course, which isn't a problem except for finding a place to do it. My good friend Bequi (becky with a Q) might give me a ride and help out herself depending on where I volunteer at.

My once-a-week American History class is long and drains my laptop battery pretty bad, but it doesn't seem too tough. The exams are focused mainly on essays, and since I'm already apt with American History knowledge, I should do OK.

My Dance Appreciation class is hilarious cause I have a bunch of friends in it, and the woman teaching it is kind of eccentric about "her art."

I'm taking a Modern Logic class as well -- it's kind of complicated so far -- actually, no, what's more complicated is what he exactly wants us to do for assignments.

I don't have a job yet, and it doesn't look like I'll have one, so I'll have to earn my money the more dangerous, fun, and Kevin-esque way -- through poker.

I'll have some pictures sometime next week.

haha fuck you domino's

you're dead to me now.

on my last night of work, i worked from 5 PM to 1:15 AM. asgkhgf;dsgg;;;

I made $250 in wages/tips combined my last 2 days of work. not bad at all.

Oh man. So tired. And it's only 12:15. Usually I'm not sleepy until 3 AM at the earliest.

I got into Domino's around 5, expecting a normal slow-paced, overstaffed Friday, but it was busy all fuckin night. From 5 PM to 11 PM (I was supposed to get off at 10). The last 3 drivers of the night ended up being me, Jorge, and Lindsay, who were taking 3-4 runs at a time in our last 2 hours.) Mostly good tips, though plenty of rich jerks who think a $1 tip is sufficient. Lindsay had it worse --- $54 order and a $4 tip. "wow."

I've only got one more night anyway, then I get to see Sufjan Stevens Sunday night in NYC. Can't wait! Work wasn't all bad either, I decided to (after debating it for a few days) ask out to dinner an attractive and witty co-worker before I go back to school. She's really cool, and I wouldn't be able to forgive myself if I didn't at least try to get to know her better before I left.

It's crazy though -- I've got so much stuff to do in my last week in MD. More than I'm used to, which will require me to wake up before noon and stop drinking for a week, but God knows I'll find a way around that. I've been satiating my cravings as of late with a microbrewed, non-alcoholic "ginger beer." tasty!

Oh yeah, something to amuse my readers. I brought a pizza to a house tonight, and the guy who answered it was fat, balding, and had nothing but UNDERWEAR ON. And it wasn't that awesome "Hanes" underwear that Michael Jordan endorses and shit. It was like, whitey fuckin tighties with a really thin bathrobe that did NOT leave much to the imagination. He gave me a $5 tip, but still. Ugh.

Who DOES that? WHO DOES THAT?

This is my 100th blog entry. I wish I had something enlightening and inspiring to write, but I really don't.

I find it funny how people at crappy parties mention how bad I make a gin and tonic -- I think they're just pussies who can't handle the fact that my drinks are 3/4 gin and 1/4 tonic. But that's my punishment for liking the taste of gin. Bottoms up!

I'm really looking forward (in ONE week) to seeing Sufjan Stevens at NYC's Bowery Ballroom with Laura. It's a long bus ride to and fro, but show #3 of Sufjan's 5-night stint in Manhattan will be fantastic.

I'm getting pretty sick of work at this point. I mean, if I wasn't going back to B-lo, I could probably stand another month or 2 at Domino's without too much problem, but the good money and (mostly) nice customers and co-workers/bosses isn't enough to keep me there. Too much shit with tiny, silly rules like checking with someone before clocking out your runs -- even if it's incredibly busy, the runs you're taking are obvious that they should be together, and no one's around.

Then there's the always wearing your fucking visor that ruins Kev's hair, being given the guilt trip shit everytime you point out you don't want to stay an extra 30 minutes to an hour more than your scheduled shift to help clean up, when I actually clean up/help out in between runs anyway. More than most drivers do.

Sorry, but I get paid $5.50 an hour while I'm in the store. It's gonna take me some heavy convincing to do more work.

I have one more week of work, and I want to take off Thursday to play in a fun poker game I've been looking forward to. I need to take off Thursday, have my last day of work be August 22nd, and do all this while keeping a smile on my face and getting myself a solid reference in my current manager. I think I can do it.

My college buddy Dan (who will not be coming back for the Fall of 2005 :( ) has been tearing it up in his poker winnings lately. Here's to him that he continues this streak.

My best finish recently, on the other hand, was 96th out of 2500 in a cheap-o tournament online that netted me a few bucks profit. Blargh.

Usually I drink to simply get away from my problems/annoyances in everyday life, but sometimes things don't work out, and all the alcohol does is bring back every single one of your problems you could possibly imagine in a head-on assault.

And the worst part is, you can't get up and do anything about it. You can't go home or call someone to vent. You can't because you're fucking incapacitated, alone, and piss drunk on somebody's couch, and 100% aware of it. That's a horrible feeling.

I'm not supposed to feel excluded, depressed, or helpless when I drink. That's the entire opposite effects than what I want.

But sometimes that's all I'll get.

Serves me right, I suppose. I'm sure I'll figure out why after it's too late.

______________

At the moment, I'm searching for flights back to Buffalo. A good thing to be doing in my current mindset.

My car doesn't appear to be ready tonight, so my mother called me and told me I could use her vehicle for pizza delivery. One step closer to recouping my $400+ losses.

_______________

Some good news: The Mountain Goats alongside the Prayers and Tears of Arthur Digby Sellers are coming to Buffalo (at the Icon) in October. Finally.

At least I found my wallet.

After a nice lunch with Heather, I received an unpleasant phone call that I could tell was bad news from the tone of my mother's voice.

I thought my car's brakes pretty much died last Monday, when I came back from a fun wedding in upstate NY. After taking it into the shop ("new brakes usually run around $300") I was told today that the problem was not, in fact, my brakes at all. It was the hub wheel bearing (whatever the fuck that is), and will run me $440 to fix. I can afford it, but it's a huge blow into my finances, and not something I needed AT ALL.

There's really nothing else to add. I miss work when I don't have access to my car, and without work I can't work off the repair costs while it's in the shop.

It's quite ironic that I'm listening to the Beach Boys "Don't Worry, Baby" right now as well. Yeah, everything will turn out alright. Fuck that.

edit: Pictures. More to come in the next few days.

If you get there before me --
would you save me a seat?

And if I never get there, at all --
would you leave the seat empty?

If you get there before me,
would you light us a fire?

And if I never show...
You can watch the embers glow,
and keep the fire burning.

This is a song for you, in case I never make it through,
to where you are.

Jaw surgery went well. It also resulted in (going on 5 days now) of Kevin taking out his bitchiness and anger over AIM away messages. I started work again yesterday, an 8.5 hour shift starting at noon for Domino's. Kinda takes the energy out of ya.

I'm still making a lot of money though, and generally enjoying work, though don't let anyone convince you otherwise -- it IS tiring, especially when I have to close the store (wash dishes, take apart makeline, sweep/mop) like tonight. I also don't get back till after midnight on those nights.

My mouth was swollen from the surgery, and is finally going back to normal, even though the jaw area (where they did the bone grafting -- took bone out of my jaw area, and inserted it into the upper part of my mouth, closer to where I'll eventually get my two teeth implants put in come December).

I can talk a lot easier now, but it still hurts to speak a lot. Very sore, which sucks, but at least the swelling's gone down. I knew what I was getting into when I decided to have the surgery, so I can't complain too much. I think about 2005 --- with all the trips to the hospital/having anesthesia/getting black eyes, it's certainly upped my pain tolerance.

I'm leaving this Friday for a couple days in upstate New York, where I'll get to see my cool cousin Tanya get married at a nice Catholic church in Troy -- the reception is at a freakin' lake, and will feature a lot of beer and good food. I went out today and got some EXCEPTIONALLY nice clothes. A couple pairs of slacks, and two very nice shirts -- one is a button-down green shirt that looks damn good on me, and the other is a sky blue shirt with a collar, that also allows for a nice tie. New brownish belt, too. Dockers, on sale. $15.

I remember things. I remember Laura mentioning to me that she could get me 30% off on some product at B.R. --- part of her extravagant discounts/offers they give her as an employee. $80 sunglasses my ass (or my eyes, more specifically. They're feeling better. Not as irritated.) She was also kind enough to stop by the first night after my surgery (when ironically enough I was feeling pretty good for day 1 of surgery --- everything went downhill after that). She brought me a Chuck Palahnuik book, "Lullabye", which I started to read, but then slacked off. I'm a 1/3 of the way through -- it's a good book so far. Apparentely he gets a lot of flack for his writing style, but I enjoy it.

Sarah also stopped by 2 times over the weekend, which was awesome. I don't think people realize how much I appreciate things like that -- I may act all negative, but getting visitors when you're sick/in pain is a wonderful thing. She brought chocolate pudding, and a cool French movie (A Very Long Engagement) from the directors of Amelie. It was very well done, and had a nice ending.

I'm partially excited about going back to school, but don't feel like I've accomplished everything I wanted to while being at home for the summer. Even when I got my job, there was still this feeling of a laid-back, slow goin' Kev that's been around my entire life in Maryland. And when you only have 3 months to get things done -- well, it's not good for people like me.

I haven't even gotten anything organized for going back to Buffalo. No packing, no new wardrobe (I'm thinking about revamping mine just a little), no getting really excited. Whatever. It'll come when it comes.

A lot more I wanted to write in this entry -- more philosophical than just a explanation of my life. At least I remember things with the latter.
everybody knows you only live a day
but it's brilliant anyway
I saw you in a perfect place
It’s gonna happen soon but not today
So go to sleep and make the change
I’ll meet you here tomorrow...
